If you have Medicaid and depending on your level of Medicaid, you might qualify for a Medicare Advantage PPO or HMO Special Needs Plan (SNP). These type of plan is only for Dual Eligible individuals (people that have both Medicare and Medicaid). These plans include more extra benefits than regular HMO and PPO Plans.

Extra Help for Prescription/Low Income Subsidy LIS *

If you are applying for a Medicare Advantage with Prescription drug coverage or a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan with a monthly premium, your premium for the plan may be reduced depending on your level of extra help.

PERA *

If you qualify for PERA but also Medicare, then you have a choice. You can stay with PERA or with a Medicare Option. You will want to compare the benefits and costs of your PERA plan versus the Medicare Options to find out which way is better for you. Before you make any decisions, you should contact your PERA benefit administrator and ask she or him what happens if you sign up for Medicare.

VA *

If you qualify for veteran benefits and also have Medicare Part A and Part B, you could get a Medicare Advantage plan with a $0 monthly premium. A Medicare Advantage plan has many extra benefits (for example, Gym Membership, Over-the-counter items, Dental, and more). You will also be able to go to doctors nearby your home for things like a flu or annual physical exams instead of driving to the nearest VA office. Additionally, it is always a good idea to be able to visit other doctors for a second opinion if you are not sure on the VA doctor’s recommendations. There are many advantages to the Medicare Advantage plans. You will still have your VA benefits even if you sign up for a Medicare Option.

Other plans like Employer Retirement plans *

If you qualify for an Employer Retirement plan and also Medicare, then you have a choice. You can go with your Employer Retirement plan or with a Medicare Option. You can compare the benefits and costs of your Employer plan versus the Medicare Options to find out which way is better for you. However, before you make any decisions, you should contact your Employer plan benefit administrator and ask she or him what happens if you sign up for Medicare Option. With most Employer Retirement plans, once you sign-up with Medicare, you will not be able to join their plan again.

Disabled *

Being on Social Security Disability for 24 months will qualify you automatically for Original Medicare before age 65. You will be able to enroll in any Medicare Advantage plan available in your area at the same cost as any other Medicare member. However, depending on your state laws, you might not be able to join a Medicare Supplement. If your state requires Medicare companies to give you a policy, they don’t regulate the cost of the policies. Therefore, most Medicare plans have very high premiums for disabled individuals.

ESRD *

Having ESRD qualifies you for Original Medicare before age 65. However, you are not allowed to sign up (or change to) a Medicare Advantage plan unless you are currently on a plan from the same company.

Hospital Indemnity *

A Hospital Indemnity plan is additional coverage you can buy for $30 to $60 per month. This coverage helps you with your out-of-pocket expenses to minimize your liability.

Prescription Drug Plan *

--Note-- If you do not get a Prescription Drug Plan and you don't have prescription drug insurance that is "Creditable" (as good as Medicare), you will pay a penalty in the future if you decide you need prescription drug coverage then.
